Retrofit Upgrades Revolutionise a Denbigh Bungalow

Retrofit Upgrades Revolutionise a Denbigh Bungalow

Introduction

In Denbigh, North Wales, a resident living in a 2-bedroom bungalow was facing significant challenges due to mould, damp, and an inefficient central heating system. These issues created an unhealthy living environment and resulted in high energy costs, making it difficult for the resident to manage. Our team at North Wales Retrofit, dedicated to providing free home energy advice visits to low-income households across North Wales, stepped in to assist. By leveraging the UK Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, we could completely transform the energy efficiency of this home, improving the resident’s quality of life while reducing their energy costs.

Assessment

The initial enquiry revealed that the property was suffering from widespread mould and damp, exacerbated by poor ventilation and an outdated oil boiler. The heating system, being both expensive and inefficient, was a primary contributor to the poor living conditions. Our team conducted a thorough retrofit assessment to determine the best course of action. This assessment highlighted the need for a comprehensive upgrade, including the replacement of the boiler with a more efficient heating solution, improved insulation, and enhanced ventilation. A model was created from the assessment report, outlining the necessary home improvements to optimise energy efficiency.

Funding

To ensure the residents could benefit from these much-needed upgrades without financial strain, our advisor guided them through the process of applying for an ECO4 grant. This government-backed scheme, aimed at improving energy efficiency in low-income households, covered the full cost of the retrofit. The funding allowed for the installation of a Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump, the replacement of radiators, the installation of high-efficiency solar panels, and the addition of loft insulation. This comprehensive approach ensured that all aspects of the home’s energy efficiency were addressed without any financial burden on the resident.

Installation

The installation phase was carefully managed to minimise disruption to the resident. The outdated oil boiler was replaced with a state-of-the-art Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump, chosen for its high efficiency. Additionally, the radiators were upgraded to complement the new heating system. Ten high-efficiency solar panels were installed on the roof, providing a renewable source of energy capable of generating 3.5kW of electricity. To address the dampness and improve insulation, 300mm of loft insulation was added, along with improved ventilation systems. Throughout the installation, we maintained regular communication with the resident to ensure everything was progressing smoothly.

Outcome

The completion of the retrofit brought about a remarkable transformation in the property’s energy performance. The bungalow’s energy efficiency rating was boosted from a ‘D’ to an ‘A’, the highest possible score. This upgrade not only resolved the issues of mould and damp but also significantly reduced the resident’s energy bills, saving them an estimated £1,141 annually.

The project also had a positive environmental impact, reducing the property’s carbon emissions. The resident now enjoys a healthier living environment, with lower energy costs and enhanced comfort. The successful implementation of this project underscores our commitment to improving living conditions for vulnerable households across Denbighshire.
